The Board-Back Cord Chair is a working dining chair made only from timber and cord. A single curved board forms the back, set between two round posts at shoulder height. The seat is natural paper cord woven in an envelope pattern, and each side is braced with two stretchers, one above the other, which gives the chair a ladder-like profile and a lot of stiffness.
At a glance it suits rustic and Scandinavian rooms; in practice it is the chair you put in a busy dining room because there is nothing on it to tear or stain.
Built to be repaired. Joints are mortise-and-tenon, glued and pinned, so a loose leg can be re-glued rather than the chair being scrapped. The cord seat can be re-woven on the existing frame, and the timber finish can be refreshed with oil.
Construction. Solid hardwood, turned round legs, curved back board shaped from solid timber, hand-woven seat.
Where it works. Opposite a booth run, around communal tables in cafés and bakeries, and in restaurants that want a lighter chair to match natural timber tables.
Options. Finish, cord colour and a loose seat pad with removable cover.
